Futureman TV Series Review Seasons 1-3

As we discussed on our recent Podcast of things to watch during the lockdown of 2020 - Future Man Hulu was one of the suggestions.   Future Man is a Time Travel comedy that can best be described as The Last Starfighter meets Hot Tub Time Machine.  Season one was great.   A couple of time travelers from a miserable future land in the year 2017 to find the "savior". An average guy that was the only person in the world to beat their recruitment video game.  Of course, he isn’t what they expected instead he is just a video game playing janitor.    They join up with him anyway to try and fix the future by changing the past.   Time Travel fans know how good that usually works out and this show takes us on a fun journey through time.

The highlights from Season 1 include some great stuff in the 1980’s that includes one of the Time Travel warriors becoming a Corey Hart fan and getting involved in an impromptu shirtless Volleyball game a la TOP GUN.     My favorite episode of Season 1 includes this same character Wolf opening an underground sewer restaurant where he kidnaps famous people for a culinary experience of a lifetime. There is also a great scene where the main character accidentally cock blocks his dad and takes the Back to the Future mom scene a step to far.  The first season has some really funny stuff and plays around with fun Time Travel homages.

Season 2 for me was a little bit disappointing as the show gets bogged down in a dystopian future that was a little less compelling then going back in time.  The show picks back up again near the end of the season with some really good stuff and the end of season 2 sets up perfectly for a great third season.

Season 3 picks up in far future with our characters prisoners and a part of a Running Man style game show.  A hilarious start to an interesting season.   I loved some of the concepts in this season like the place they find called HAVEN.  A place where time stands still.   All in all it was a good show and a fun and easy binge-watch.  Of course, I’m a big-time travel fan.

The finale of season 3 was a satisfying series finale.  Of course, this is a time travel show –so they could always find a way to continue on.

Sharknado 6 2018 ?? out of 10

Sharknado 6 2018  ?? out of 10

Honestly I don’t even know what to rate this last entry in the Sharknado saga.  It defies a rating on a scale of 1-10.  It was mostly a terrible mess of time travel nonsense. It should have been called The Ludacris Shark Movie.

In the middle of a time vortex Finn makes out with Tara’s Reid’s robot head that is stitching out of a flying Robot Shark from the Future.  So over the top silly and stupid that it borders on being just terrible.... or So Bad it is Good???  I honestly don’t know yet.   If  didn't see Sharknado 1-5  then this movie would be totally confusing.  Well it was probably confusing anyway.   Sharknado 6 was basically a Time Travel movie that just happened to have Sharknados everywhere the characters went.

The film opens with Finn leaping into the age of the Dinosaurs where he meets up with characters that have died in previous films.  Time travel is strange is the explaination.  They leap from time to time hoping that the next leap will be the leap back home....(wait that is a different show).   The film is filled with terrible CGI as they fly around on Dinosaurs, before leaping to the time of King Arthur (or a leftover set from Xena Warrior Princess).  Terrible "Celebrity cameos"  including some Transgender Morgana that used modern day annoying catchphrases.  So many bad lines of dialogue.   This mess is what happens when you give low budget film makers whose original movie took off by accident more money.   The film making itself doesn't get any better --but the bad CGI flying shark budget is bigger.  Of course the bad CGI sharks may be the best part of this strange flick.

For some reason I find myself at a complete loss as to how to rank this odd movie.  It is so bad that it is at times entertaining --but not in the way that the original was--because the self awareness of what they are doing is involved.    Sharknado 6 just is.    If you sat through the other 5 Sharknados then you have to see how it ends.   If not --like most of the Bad Shark movies that I torture myself with ...on it's own it is just that ---A Bad Shark Movie.

Time Lapse 2014 5 out of 10 (Spoilers included) (Time Travel Movie #4)

Time Lapse 2014  5 out of 10

(Spoilers)

After recently watching both Project Almanac and Predestination I caught a little bit of a Time Travel bug.   I starting seeking out Time Travel movies that I hadn’t seen yet.   Time Lapse from 2014 was 1 of 4 Time Travel films that I watched over the Holiday weekend.

When I saw the trailer on Netflix it immediately reminded me of an old Twilight Zone episode called A Most Unusual Camera.
Three roommates find a giant camera in an apartment directly across from them when they go to check on a tenant that seems to have disappeared.    The camera is capable of taking a picture one day into the future.

I loved the original Twilight Zone episode as you see the three people devolve and turn on one another based on speculation as to what the next day’s picture meant.   Theirs actions start to become a self-fulfilling prophecy.   This movie follows the same logic –but to a silly extreme.  The logic of the three main characters is absurd at times.   They find the body of the guy from across the street in a storage locker and he his skin is completely fried.   They immediately jump to the illogical assumption that if his death is caused by doing something different that what the picture shows.   This of course makes no sense .  No intelligent person would ever jump to such a silly conclusion.  This assumption drives the plot as they try and stage what they saw in the picture of the next day based on this nonsensical conclusion.

The characters are so simple minded in their use of the time machine camera.  The one guy places bets on greyhound races…..The lowest level of betting possible—which leads to the conflict of the film which includes a bookie that starts to question why the guy keeps winning.   That is an acceptable story for the 1950’s , but who in 2016 wouldn’t buy a lottery ticket instead of bettering on greyhound dog races????   The one character is more concerned with what painting he paints each day than anything else.    If these little details didn’t bug me so much I probably would have enjoyed the film more.   What actually happens to the characters in the story is interesting –  I just feel the writers didn’t know how to craft the story without the ridiculous leaps of stupidity to drive the characters actions in the film.  If you can get past the stupidity of the characters you may find it entertaining.

Looper 2012 8 out of 10 (Spolier Filled discussion)

Looper 2012  8 out of 10

Warning Spoliers

Bruce Willis must have enjoyed making 12 Monkeys. When he  saw the script for this movie near remake he signed up for it again.   This sci-fi movie is part12 Monkeys, a little bit Terminator, a little bit (Twilight Zone) and a little bit Logan's Run.

Part Terminator/ 12 Monkeys
The main character (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a hit man in the year 2044, whose job is to kill people sent back in time by the mob in order for them to be killed without it being tracked in the more advanced future.   He is called a Looper because eventually his older self will be sent back to be killed and close the loop and he will then be retired at an early age to enjoy his life.    Everything goes to hell for him when his older self (Bruce Willis) is sent back as one of his victims and gets the drop on him.  The movie has an interesting plot even though it is derivative of so many previous sci-fi films.

His older self has come back in order to kill one of 3 kids that will eventually become a Hitler type of evil syndicate ruler in the future.   This brings up the  ethical dilemma of whether it is worth killing 2 innocent kids in order to make sure the one evil one doesn't live to become the villain that he does.   The future version of the character is set on killing the kid since he will eventually be responsible for killing the innocent women he loves.  The younger self wants to kill the older version in order to restore his current life and so is protecting the kid.

Part Logan's Run
While all of this is happening his fellow Loopers are trying to chase both version of him down.  I find it not too coincidental that he comes back 30 years from the future (30 years was the age in the movie when you were supposed to die in Logan's Run)

Part Twilight Zone Episode   --It's A Good Life
Well the kid turns out to have special telekinetic powers almost to the point of Billy Mummy's character from that famous old Twilight Zone episode where he wishes people out in the cornfield.   The movie ends with the younger version sacrificing himself and letting the kid live.  His thought  process is that the mom dying trying to save him will be what sends him down the bad path.    Personally I think this was flawed, wishful thinking. The kid had already shown a dark side.  I don't believe the mother's love was going to be enough to keep this kid from becoming the villain in the future that he does.   I think the kid should have been eliminated.  You don't let the kid that can make people explode with his mind live in hopes that the mom can make him a better person.   He has already murdered people.  Anyway it was an entertaining movie --very much along the lines of a 12 Monkeys, yet not as good.

Termination Point 2007 3 out of 10

Termination Point  2007   3 out of 10

The plane that his wife got on today crashed yesterday???  and it is all Lou Diamond Phillips fault.   Jason Priestly runs around in a Hawaiian shirt trying to retrieve a remote controller that will help bring the plane that his wife in on that is stuck in a time vortex and save planet Earth from certain destruction from a wormhole.
Lou Diamond Phillips is a scientist that stole his own teleporter to keep it out of the hands of the government that wants to use it as a weapon.  The film is just plain cheesy --from the special effects to the acting making for one of the most boring time travel movies I've ever seen.  Even the trailer is cheesy.
