Futureman TV Series Review Seasons 1-3

As we discussed on our recent Podcast of things to watch during the lockdown of 2020 - Future Man Hulu was one of the suggestions.   Future Man is a Time Travel comedy that can best be described as The Last Starfighter meets Hot Tub Time Machine.  Season one was great.   A couple of time travelers from a miserable future land in the year 2017 to find the "savior". An average guy that was the only person in the world to beat their recruitment video game.  Of course, he isn’t what they expected instead he is just a video game playing janitor.    They join up with him anyway to try and fix the future by changing the past.   Time Travel fans know how good that usually works out and this show takes us on a fun journey through time.

The highlights from Season 1 include some great stuff in the 1980’s that includes one of the Time Travel warriors becoming a Corey Hart fan and getting involved in an impromptu shirtless Volleyball game a la TOP GUN.     My favorite episode of Season 1 includes this same character Wolf opening an underground sewer restaurant where he kidnaps famous people for a culinary experience of a lifetime. There is also a great scene where the main character accidentally cock blocks his dad and takes the Back to the Future mom scene a step to far.  The first season has some really funny stuff and plays around with fun Time Travel homages.

Season 2 for me was a little bit disappointing as the show gets bogged down in a dystopian future that was a little less compelling then going back in time.  The show picks back up again near the end of the season with some really good stuff and the end of season 2 sets up perfectly for a great third season.

Season 3 picks up in far future with our characters prisoners and a part of a Running Man style game show.  A hilarious start to an interesting season.   I loved some of the concepts in this season like the place they find called HAVEN.  A place where time stands still.   All in all it was a good show and a fun and easy binge-watch.  Of course, I’m a big-time travel fan.

 The finale of season 3 was a satisfying series finale.  Of course, this is a time travel show –so they could always find a way to continue on.

The Orville Vs Star Trek Discovery Which show should you Watch??

First I caught The Orville a Star Trek Parody by the Creator of The Family Guy Seth MacFarlane.

The Premiere episode was decent and I know I need to give another shot --but on first impressions it was underwhelming.  I love The Family Guy --but Seth's live action efforts so far have fallen short of what he can do in Animation.   I was hoping that this Star Trek Parody was going to be like Galaxy Quest or at least have some of the Family Guy style humor.  The premiere episode disappointed in that respect.  I just expected more.   Of course a premiere episode has a lot of story building and character introductions so I will definitely give this show a couple episodes more to see if things pick up.   I hope they are able to establish more of a sense of humor in the upcoming episodes as this first episode just felt like a watered down version of what I hoped for.

I also watched Star Trek Discovery.   What in the hell happened to the Klingons??  They look like some cheap  reject version of contestant on Sci Fi channels Face Off.   Supposedly this Trek effort takes place in the original Star Trek universe of William Shatner and the universe of the current Trek films.    What a strange decision?  Why Reboot the Franchise to then do a show in the old universe.    If this is supposed to be in that universe why make the Klingons looks so different???  Who knows.    The first episode itself was decent.  A crew of on a Federation Starship heads out to check on a relay station that has taken damage and stumbles across a bunch of Klingons.   A good start for a Star Trek series as the episode literally ends with a bunch of Klingons showing up for a fight.    

The problem with this series is that after the first episode it will be heading to CBS Streaming only.   The first episode only wasn't compelling enough to sign me up for a whole new subscription service.     So I guess I will not be watching the first of this series until it hits DVD or Netflix.   I would probably watch more episodes if it remained on CBS, but not being a Trekkie I'm not willing to pay for this one show.

Hello Ladies 2013 9 out of 10 (TV Show Review)

Hello Ladies 2013  9 out of 10

Hello Ladies was a short lived, but excellent HBO Series.  It was created by and stars Steven Merchant.   The series is about 8 episodes and then concludes with a direct to HBO movie.  Steven Merchant plays Stuart Pritchard a socially awkward, tall and lanky Brit living in Hollywood.  Stephen Merchant was a co-writer and director of the original BBC version of the office and it shows.  The Character of Stuart is like a gawky awkward version of Ricky Gervais's  David Brent.    The main character is basically a selfish bastard that only cares about trying to hook up with models at which he is an absolute walking disaster at.  Stephen Merchant is brilliant and hilarious as this awkward wanna be ladies man.   His attempts to pick up girls is hard to watch in a funny way.  At times you feel bad for him--back at other times you realize he gets exactly what he deserves because of how he treats the people around him.   I wish this series had lasted longer--but like many great British treasures it didn't.   If you love the BBC version of The Office absolutely check this series out on Netflix.

Here is a sample of a great scene from the show where he takes a girl on a date to a fancy restaurant that is a little out of his price range.  This scene pretty much sums up the series.

Sleepy Hollow : Season 1 : A TV show review

Sleepy Hollow Season 1  

I remember last year before this show aired when we did a podcast about the upcoming fall TV Season --saying that I was interested in watching it, but that I wasn't sure where they were going to pull off the Sleepy Hollow and Headless Horseman story.   I mentioned that I love the Disney animated Sleepy Hollow as well as the Washington Irving short story which I have read numerous times. How in the world were they going to turn that into a TV show?  

I just couldn't imagine how they would pull that off.  

Well a really good strong Season 1 has answered that question. 

The show features a resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) waking up in modern day Sleep Hollow being tasked with basically trying to stop the end of the world with the help of a female cop (Nicole Beharie).   It has elements similar to Grimm and Fringe and is basically what Chris Carter's Millennium should have been.   Ichabod's humor comes out of his fish out of water situation --as he tries to help unravel mysteries while making funny comments about the modern world.   The problem with a fish out of water story is eventually the fish gets used to the water and I'm sure that as the story goes along this will slowly fade away as he gets used to how the modern world is.   For season 1 this fish out of water story  element adds a lot to the humor of the show which generally has very dark stories to tell. The chemistry between the main characters grew strong in Season 1 and the actual final episode felt big screen worthy.   

The show does a great job of weaving in both modern day and flashbacks to Ichabod's time period.   I had watched it from the beginning of Season 1 until about half way through the run when we got hooked on Castle and started watching that from Season 1 to current.   So it wasn't until we were caught up on that show that I was able to revisit Season 1 of Sleepy Hollow --which finished really strong.   It was a great idea from the producers who also worked on Fringe to bring John Noble along for the ride in the middle of Season 1.  His great ability to add gravity to a story as he did so well on Fringe helped build to an amazing season finale.     The Headless Horseman as one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse was a great story concept and provides the show with a strong mythology.  The show like a Fringe or X-Files definitely gets into the monster of the week type story lines- but the strength of the mythology and the pace that it moves forward is really a major strong point of the show.   I won't spoil the Finale of Season 1 other than to say that it was a truly satisfying cliffhanger with many stories all coming to a head at the same time. 

I've heard the season two falls into a bit of a sophomore slump --but I'm anxious to dig into it just he same.
