Trailer Talk: Comic Con Trailers 2018

Here are some of the Trailer that came out of Comic Con 2018 on Saturday and some brief thoughts on them.

 Aquaman.  2018 Release   Grade  B  

The trailer has some really great moments--but also has some cheesy moments.  I really don't know know what to make of it.   Plus not being a comic book fan I still picture Aquaman as the blonde guy in tights from the Super Friends.    You know lame Aquaman.  Obviously Jason Momoa's version is already a cooler Aquaman.

DC has a bad track record for me Wonder Woman was good --but Batman vs Superman, Justice League and Suicide Squad were all disappointing.    Where will Aquaman fall?   

I really like Jason Momoa ever since I first saw him as the island bartender on a prime time soap style show called the North Shore.  He was also great in  (the not successful --but good in my opinion) Conan reboot and of course Game of Thrones.    I just don't know if I can trust what DC is going to do with the character of Aquaman.   My thoughts are to keep my expectations low for this movie and hope that it turns out good.

Shazam!  2019 Release   Grade C-

Ugh.   I wanted to like this .  Zachary Levi was amazing as Chuck in a TV Series that if you think about it mirrors the character of Shazam in many ways.   In Chuck Zachary Levi played an intelligent guy who ends up working at the Buy More as part of the Nerd Herd that fixes computers.  His character accidentally gets downloaded with amazing spy powers which made for a great fun spy/comedy tv show.    Shazam is very similar in that a kid ends up with Superman type powers.    This trailer was underwhelming and made me wish that they did a Chuck movie instead of Shazam.  Really is there anyone that was dying for a Shazam movie?   It feels like a super hero movie Shaq would star in.   

 I'll rent it because I like Zachary Levi

Glass  2019  Release    Grade B-   

As a trailer it looks pretty interesting.  Unfortunately it is directed by M. Night Shyamalan whose movies after the Sixth Sense --seemed to get worse and worse with each film.  The Happening was one of the worst big budget movies I've ever sat through.   Signs was great until the lackluster and insulting to the intelligence of its audience third act.    If you like M. Night's movies then this is probably a dream come true .  The film has good cast and links several previous films.   Being fair to the trailer I think it does a good job of setting up what could be an interesting movie.   For me........    Just tell me the twist and I'll save my 10 bucks......    I 'm not getting suckered into another M Night film.

Godzilla King of the Monsters    2019 Release    Grade B-

The trailer looks decent but all Godzilla movies look okay in the trailers.   They keep trying to do a big budget Godzilla and it always turns out to be not as good as you hope it will be.   I think Cloverfield and the first Pacific Rim have done it better.    The silly monsters that the old man in a rubber suit Godzilla used to fight are back in this film.  Eleven from Stranger Things is in this movie  , but they make her look exacly like her Stranger Things character that audiences may think she is Eleven.  I wonder if maybe Godzilla works better in the rubber suit.   I'm sure I'll see this when it comes out on DVD-- but not necessarily in the theaters.   

Based on these  Comic Con trailers  I probably see Aquaman in the theaters.   The other 3 films ----I'll see eventually --but probably not until they hit Netflix.

VICE 2015 5 out of 10

VICE 2015  5 out of 10

VICE is a poor man’s Westworld.  I was searching Netflix for some Sci-Fi movies that I may have overlooked and came across VICE starring Bruce Willis and the trailer looked interesting so I put it to the top of my Netflix queue.  It looked like a more extreme version of a Westworld type story where people pay to visit the VICE resort (owned by Bruce Willis’s character) to basically live out Fantasy Island style dreams of Murder and Sex with no consequences.   The Artificials that live in this resort basically live the same day over and over again.  They get killed by the guests and are just reprogrammed to the previous morning with no memory of what happened.  Then one Artificial (played by Ambyr Childers)  glitches and recalls being murdered the day before.   She escapes the resort into the real world and is chased down by the goons from the Resort.    Thomas Jane  (from The Expanse)  plays a cop looking to bring down the resort that is also chasing down the Artificial.    The movie sounds better than it is.  I’ve seen much better movies dealing with Humanoid Robots coming to terms with the fact they aren’t human.  Blade Runner of course comes to mind as does Ex Machina or the BattleStar Gallactica reboot.  Even Josh Whedon’s the Dollhouse basically treaded on this material (even though it was with programmed humans).   These movie teases interesting stuff –but basically gives you a standard characters running away from bullets from the people that are trying to hunt them down storyline.  It doesn’t get into any of the really interesting stuff I was hoping to see.   The Artifical comes to terms with being a robot almost immediately.  A waster of the most interesting element in the story.  Bruce Willis was basically wasted in the role of the owner of VICE.  Anyone could have been in that role and it wouldn’t have changed the movie.     Basically it was a disappointment…. I hope the Westworld  Mini-Series does a much better job than this cheap rip-off did.

Warning Spoliers

Bruce Willis must have enjoyed making 12 Monkeys. When he  saw the script for this movie near remake he signed up for it again.   This sci-fi movie is part12 Monkeys, a little bit Terminator, a little bit (Twilight Zone) and a little bit Logan's Run. 

Part Terminator/ 12 Monkeys

 The main character (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a hit man in the year 2044, whose job is to kill people sent back in time by the mob in order for them to be killed without it being tracked in the more advanced future.   He is called a Looper because eventually his older self will be sent back to be killed and close the loop and he will then be retired at an early age to enjoy his life.    Everything goes to hell for him when his older self (Bruce Willis) is sent back as one of his victims and gets the drop on him.  The movie has an interesting plot even though it is derivative of so many previous sci-fi films.  

His older self has come back in order to kill one of 3 kids that will eventually become a Hitler type of evil syndicate ruler in the future.   This brings up the  ethical dilemma of whether it is worth killing 2 innocent kids in order to make sure the one evil one doesn't live to become the villain that he does.   The future version of the character is set on killing the kid since he will eventually be responsible for killing the innocent women he loves.  The younger self wants to kill the older version in order to restore his current life and so is protecting the kid.  

Part Logan's Run

While all of this is happening his fellow Loopers are trying to chase both version of him down.  I find it not too coincidental that he comes back 30 years from the future (30 years was the age in the movie when you were supposed to die in Logan's Run)

Part Twilight Zone Episode   --It's A Good Life

Well the kid turns out to have special telekinetic powers almost to the point of Billy Mummy's character from that famous old Twilight Zone episode where he wishes people out in the cornfield.   The movie ends with the younger version sacrificing himself and letting the kid live.  His thought  process is that the mom dying trying to save him will be what sends him down the bad path.    Personally I think this was flawed, wishful thinking. The kid had already shown a dark side.  I don't believe the mother's love was going to be enough to keep this kid from becoming the villain in the future that he does.   I think the kid should have been eliminated.  You don't let the kid that can make people explode with his mind live in hopes that the mom can make him a better person.   He has already murdered people.  Anyway it was an entertaining movie --very much along the lines of a 12 Monkeys, yet not as good.

I had passed over seeing this flick because when it original came out.   The trailer just didn't capture my attention as a must see movie.     It just looked like a bunch of older actors doing a retired spy movie and the concept didn't seem that thrilling.    I decided to record it on my DVR since its sequel just came out in theaters and to my surprise the movie was actually really good.  The film stars Bruce Willis as an ex spy that has retired and ends up getting sucked back into the business when he shows up on a hit list.  After a near death experience at his home he goes on a journey to find out why this is happening.   This leads to him meeting up with a girl in the payroll department that he has been talking to over the phone getting her involved in the adventure and meeting up with a bunch of old spy buddies.  The supporting cast is full of oscar worthy actors that include John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren all of which do a great job.   The film is based on a graphic novel so has a little bit of an over the top comic feel to it, which is common in a lot of recent spy movies.   The plot moves along at a good pace with witty dialogue between the characters which makes for a satisfying action film.  There was a really cool segment towards the end of the film where they pull off a kidnapping that felt like a scene from one of the Oceans Eleven movies.     It was a lot better than I had expected it to be

The Expendables 2 2012 9+ out of 10

Stallone sure had a great idea.   Assembling the most well know action stars from a different era into one movie.  The first Expendables was an enjoyable film, but number 2 is even better.   The movie knows what it is and executes it almost flawlessly.

  It has so much aged testosterone on the screen that the screen itself may blow up.   The film kicks off with a great action scene of the group storming some facility in order to rescue someone.  There are a lot of explosions and kick ass action scenes that make you feel like you are in a 1980's action movie (where most of these movie stars  kicked ass in there own films).   The genius of this film is that it assembles all of these stars together.   Bruce Willis and Arnold just had cameos the first time around,  this time they get to join in the fun.    And this time we also get Van Damme and Chuck Norris.....(Seriously you should be drinking a beer and lifting weights just reading about this movie).   It gets a little cheesy at times  with its self awareness.  The movie references  lines from the actors other roles with a cheesy wink and nod.           I actually loved those cheesy little moments.   For example: The group is taking heavy fire in this town in Russia and all of a sudden an unseen figure rescues them.   He walks out of the debris and we see Chuck Norris and Stallone greets him and there are a bunch of Chuck Norris jokes about his character.   Great Stuff.   Sign me up for Expendables 3 right now.  The 1980's and early 1990's  was the heyday of great action movies and even with some of these actors being older than dirt....they still have it on screen in a weird fun nostalgic way.  The movie doesn't even really need a great plot....because the interaction of this larger than life macho action stars is just as good as the action scenes themselves.    It reminds me of one of my favorite sports shows on TV   Open Court on NBA Tv,  where a bunch of great retired players talk about their heydays.   I'd love to just watch this group of actors sit around and tell stories from the set of their old movies....getting to watch them altogether on screen is a true joy.
