For the Love of Scooby Doo: (Part 8) ScoobyNatural 2018

One of the reasons I decided to dive down the rabbit hole for the series Supernatural is because I heard they did a cross-over episode with Scooby-Doo.    Diving into a show that is filming it's 15th and final season is quite an undertaking and after watching season 1.   I put off continuing it before my wife got hooked so we could watch Veronica Mars another crime-solving mystery show.  Apparently, a good decision as we were able to binge Veronic Mars before my wife got hopelessly hooked on Supernatural.  Now we are in for the long haul.

Well currently we are about 2 episodes away from the end of Season 5 of Supernatural and I decided I couldn't wait until we naturally got to season 13 to treat myself with the reason the show originally came to my attention.  I really enjoy Supernatural, but have some criticisms of the show after 5 seasons.   What I love about the show the most are the episodes where they get a little funny, weird and silly.   Now 5 seasons into the show and the characters it was a perfect time to watch the Winchester brothers get magically zapped into the middle of a Scooby-Doo episode from season 13.

It was a perfect cross-over episode.  The Winchester brothers that hunt real ghosts, monsters, and demons thrust into an episode of Scooby-Doo.  The integration of the two shows worked wonderfully.  Dean, of course, tries to hit on Daphne with no success and Velma falls for Sam.   The scene where Dean --who is always eating burgers gets a chance to eat one of the oversized sandwiches in the cartoon was classic.   The episode had everything you want in a classic Scooby-Doo episode and seamlessly weaved the Supernatural characters into the story.  The mystery takes a tangent from how Dean remembered the cartoon as other characters actually start to die and there becomes an urgency to protect the Scooby gang and keep them safe.   

Being a fan of both Supernatural and an Ultra fan of Scooby-Doo makes this one of my favorite episodes on Supernatural so far.

At first the latest Scooby Doo DVD adventure seemed like it was going to be a little underwhelming.   The same storyline that has happened way too many times before,  finds Scooby and the gang at a talent show in a opera house with a Phantom trying to ruin the show and scare off the contestants.  Of course it quickly turns into a little bit of a clever twist on this old plot.  The movie should have been called  "Will the real Phantom please stand up"  or   "How Many Phantoms are there?"  The gang uncovers the Phantom way too early in the movie and it quickly becomes apparent that there are more Phantoms in this mystery than you can shake a stick at, which actually worked to make the story interesting.  I love the way that after all these years the people behind Scooby Doo can continue to make it interesting.   Whether it is with the mythology driven  recent Mystery Inc series, What's New Scooby Doo,  the original series or direct to DVD movies.   I will never grow to old to appreciate that group of meddling kids and their lovable dog.

Scooby and the gang head off to Comic Con for a fun action packed adventure in the latest direct to DVD movie Scooby Doo movie .  The gang must solve a mystery that  surrounds the convention and the release of an new updated and much darker  Blue Falcon movie . Scooby has to find his inner Dog Wonder and help solve the mystery An old nemesis of the Blue Falcon from the original TV show is terrorizing the convention and trying to put a stop to the new movies release.   This story did a great job of paying homage to many old Hanna Barbara characters by using the Comic Con as a setting.  It was and action packed story that played on the updating of the old Batman TV series starring Adam West with  the newer darker films.   Blue Falcon was a silly cartoon version of Batman with a robot dog as a sidekick.  The new and improved  Blue Falcon movie with was an obvious evolution.   The funny thing about watching this movie is that it really isn't that far fetched.  I can totally see The Blue Falcon getting made into a big screen live action movie someday,  after all Hollywood is all about.  I mean the Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks have all been made into movies,  why not  the Blue Falcon.   The character has recently made appearances on Mystery Inc Scooby Doo series in an episode that featured the character and now was the focus of a Scooby Doo as well.   Bring the Blue Falcon to the big screen with a CGI  Dynomutt.  All in all this was a very solid Direct to DVD Scooby Doo movie.

This Scooby Doo movie was an action packed adventure that pits the Scooby Gang against a giant fire breathing  Ghost  Dinosaur.  The action sequences are top notch for a Scooby Doo adventure and the story had a couple of interesting twists including Shaggy becoming an action hero after some hypnosis and the monster being especially strong.  This adventure follows the What's New Scooby Doo version of the Scooby gang which has still been starring in Scooby Doo movies while the Mystery Inc version runs on TV.   I love both versions.   Scooby and the gang continue to entertain me after all these years.   I even named our Great Dane puppy after a member of the Scooby Gang.  Some of the direct to DVD Scooby movies are better than others.....this entry was pretty strong.  If you are a Scooby Doo fan check this one out.

A typical Scooby Doo direct to DVD movie. Which usually means an enjoyable Scooby Doo adventure.  This time Scooby and the gang do undercover with a circus to foil a werewolf mystery.   At this point Scooby Doo has become quite repetitive and yet I find myself always coming back for more of Scooby and the gang.  I mean  how many different episodes have they faced off with werewolves or been to the circus???  Quite a few times I'm sure,  There is just something about  this  "Bunch of meddling kids and their dog"  that I love.  The coolest Great Dane ever!.   So even though there is nothing new about this Scooby case...It was still fun and action packed getting there.  

One thing I find weird is that they continue to make direct to DVD Scooby movies with the gang in one style of animation while at the same time producing the fun new version of the gang in the cool Mystery Inc. TV show.  I try not to worry about the 2 separate incarnations running at the same time and just enjoy Scooby and the gangs mystery solving abilities, but it is strange that they would basically have 2 different versions at the same time.

Despite the mis-casting of Freddie Prince Jr and Sarah Michele Gellar as Fred and Daphne......It is all about the perfect casting of Matthew Lillard and Scooby Doo. One of my favorite cartoon characters of all time I love it.
