The first
Sharknado was just the perfect storm, A So Bad that it was Good masterpiece.
So many things went wrong (right) all at the same time in the first groundbreaking Shark/Storm movie.
It has a terrifically
bad story ---a random non-sense plot and some super cheesy effects. It just
worked in all the wrong ways and somehow caught fire with the public and on
social media. So of course there was going to be a second one and the second
one hit just the other night millions of people watched it…. And it garnered a
billion tweets (I don’t even know that is possible).
So Lightning can strike
twice…or at least a Sharknado can.
The movie
itself……Well it started off great with Ian Ziering on an airplane having a
William Shatner Twilight Zone moment. Then we get the first of many cameos
–Robert Hayes of Airplane fame was flying the plane which was classic. He even had a line about what he had for dinner (a perfect throwback to Airplane).
But this
storm just didn’t have the same so bad it is good feel.
So Bad it is Good just
happens it can’t be forced. Sure you can try to be cheesy---but you just can’t
create on purpose that special SO BAD it is Good feel. I don’t think it is
possible to recreate the terribleness of the first one. The problem with
Sharknado 2 was that it was actually decent in its intentionally over the top
cheesiness and therefore was just a decent –bad sci-fi Storm/Shark movie.
Another problem with the film was the overuse of recurring cameos . It was
funny to see Al Roker and Matt Lauer discussing the Sharknados the first time,
but by the 4th time it just took away from and slowed down the movie. Lighting can strike twice, but the second one isn't as big of a jolt.
So the plot is
basically this: Some evil genius (played by former Revenge of the Nerds star Robert
Carradine) has created a Pterodactyl/Barracuda hybrid as a weapon. The government didn't want it, but he created it anyway. The testing
goes badly and it takes off and starts killing people instead of responding to
its programming. Meanwhile a marine biologist has found and egg sack that
survived from the first Sharktopus that got blown up in the original movie. So the new Sharktopus ends up an attraction at her uncle’s sea park. The bad guys decide to buy
and release the Sharktopus in order to battle the Pteracuda. In between scenes
of the two digital creatures battling in what looks like video game CGI –we get
a dull filler plot about the bad guys and marine biologist tracking the creatures. As much as I like the idea of Sharktopus, he kind of disappoints in this boring
sequel that was missing some of the qualities that made the first one much more watchable
The Verdict: A weaker storm front full of Sharks is still better than some video game level Sharktopus battling another mutant
This is the 2nd movie from the100 Greatest Sci-Fi Classics (NOT SO MUCH) DVD set--that I'm slowly attempting to work my way through.
The movie starts out a little slow - but then gets better and better (or is it worse and worse) as it goes along. It becomes a non-stop mess of pointless enjoyable cheesiness.
The Plot: The plot of this movie is a complete after thought. It seems like somebody was putting together a stunt show of a bunch of stunts they thought would be fun to see and then tried to piece together a story around those stunts after the fact. It follows the story (with a complete lack of continuity) of a team of scientists that are trying to raise a nuclear sub from the ocean floor --that somehow causes Atlantis to resurface. The small group of survivors team up with a couple of Vietnam vets that were out on a boat near the scientific platform when Atlantis resurfaces. They end up making their way to an Caribbean island that has been taken over by a cheesy Mad Max wannabe biker gang. The biker gang is led by some guy wearing a plastic Crystal Skull mask. The biker gang is what is left of the devolved Atlanean race.
A bunch of punk rockers that look like they washed onshore from a casting call from The Warriors. They ride around on motorcycles that look like they were stolen from Pee Wee Herman if he had a pimp my ride bike shop. At this point any attempt to follow the piece meal plotis pointless....but it doesn't matter. Plot who needs a plot. There are references in the movie about scenes that were obviously cut. Other scenes have been left in that seem to be a part of a different storyline that was maybe abandoned. Characters show up out of nowhere and it goes from night to day at random. It is a total mess.
The Action: The action was great....If you like the Universal Studios Wild West Stunt show or Riot act of Waterworld stunt shows. Once the movie gets past its slow introduction and we get to the world's lamest biker gang section the movie becomes a non-stop series of non-connected and pointless action scenes. Every stunt show trick in the book is used. Scenes from countless other movies are lovingly ripped off to the enjoyment of the audience. There is a pointless tour bus scene with guys jumping on top of the vehicle from a helicopter to then easily be knocked off that is a tribute to Raiders of the Lost Ark. There are scenes near the end when they make their way to Atlantis (which seems to be an island like LOST) where some guys are shooting at them from the top of a cliff over water, just so they can fall off the cliff (as a cool stunt once shot).
The Acting: What do you think??? It was totally cheesy.
The lead actor is just too old for this sh..Some of the characters have dubbed American voices since it was made out of the country. One character that they randomly meet halfway through the movie is supposed to be a fake Arnold which was kind of funny. There are some classic bad movie lines in this movie.
Indy Clone and Indy inspiration: Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull lifted a line directly from this movie at one point. The line is delivered while one of the scientist is being used by the Atlantis ancestors in some chamber that looks like a MTV video to bring them back somehow. She says " I want to know.....I want to learn" the line used at the end of Indy 4 by the Russian. All of the Indy movies were basically homages to the B Serials---I thought it was interesting that they also borrowed from this Indy/Action movie rip-off as well.....This movie had an action scene that was obviously inspired by Raiders of the Lost Ark. The title of this movie was an obvious attempt to cash in on Indy with Raiders in its title.. So it is funny that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull borrowed many elements from this movie. I guess things come full circle.
Enjoy the trailer and seek out this "Movie" (Stunt show) for a fun bad movie night party.....
Our Facebook page is here....Tune in soon for the 3rd movie from this DVD set. Next up I'll be watching Future Woman from 1969
Sharknado is hands down the best Shark/Tornado movie ever made. I'm sure it is the only Shark/Tornado movie ever made, but that makes it the best right? This is the gem that I search for when watching bad shark movies. Like Hammerhead Shark Frenzy it quickly turned from a bad movie into a SO BAD it is Good movie. They knew what they were doing and had me hooked at the title of Sharknado. It is just a fun movie title to say. With all of the crazy, silly monster movies that get churned out each year since CGI made bad monster movies possible again, why not a movie that combines the disaster films with bad shark movies? Why not indeed? Sharknado could be the first in a whole new genre. Gatortwister anyone? How about SnakeQuake? It is really brilliant if you think about it. With a movie title like Sharknado it will attract all the people that like bad disaster movies and all the people like me that can't get enough of bad shark movies. Genius!
The movie stars Ian Ziering of 90210 fame (I'm glad to see that Steve got a job after finishing high school at age 32). Apparently Steve has changed his name to Finley (of course Fin) after all it is a shark movie. Finley is a surfer that owns a bar on the Santa Monica pier SPOILER ALERT (well until a storm destroys it with giant waves and sharks flying through windows). He spends the rest of the movie trying to save his family from the silly storm of the century that is raining down sharks all over Los Angeles. I actually liked Ian Ziering is this ridiculous role. It was like journeying back to a Chuck Norris movie from the 80's.
Who needs a coherent plot when the title of your movie is Sharknado??? The plot is insane and the logic of the anything that happens in the movie is completely non existent (kind of like Sharknados). Of course with a title like Sharknado you have to leave all concepts of logic at the entrance to this amusement park ride of a silly, bad shark/tornado movie. The screenplay seems to be something pieced together from a pot smoking idea session.
Let's listen in on thewriting session for this flick:
Writer #1 "Wouldn't it be great if it was raining sharks?"
Writer #2 "Put it in the story dude"
Writer #3 "How about a scene where Ian Ziering in the middle of trying to get his family out of the city stops to rescue an entire school bus of kids Chuck Norris style"
Writer #2 "Sure dude that sounds awesome....Like something out of that classic movie Invasion USA, man"
Writer #1 "Dude at one point he can have a chainsaw and a shark can totally take out a shark falling out of the sky"
Writer # 2 " And a bunch of sharks can land in a swimming pool at an old folks home"
Writer # 3" Wait dude....Why would the old folks be out at the pool during a giant Sharknado?"
Writer # 2 "Dude.... who cares man it will look cool just put it in the script man "
That pretty much sums it up. Add Tara Reid as his ex wife, who at this point would struggle to act her way out of a paper bag and you get the movie magic that is Sharknado. A movie that makes no sense what so ever....but is a fun and incredible ride. One second it is raining and the roads are clear....next second the streets of Beverly Hills are flooded and sharks are leaping through the windows of a house that is somehow completely flooded and then blows up. Nothing makes any sense in this movie, but it doesn't matter. Sure why not try and stop the Sharknado by flying a helicopter into the air and drops homemade bombs into it? It makes sense to me, NOT. What did you really expect by a movie title Sharknado?? that it would make sense? Really??? They knew what they were doing and pulled it off better than Sharktopus did. Another great movie title that made it a must watch for bad movie lovers. Sharknado will go down in my books as one of the best SO BAD IT IS GOOD movies I've seen in awhile and it will keep me coming back to Syfy channel for more crap in search of more gems like this one.........I can't wait now for Blast Vegas.....sounds terrible....delightfully terrible.
End of the World 2013 6 out of 10 So Bad that it was almost Good. The End of the World stars Greg Grunberg (Heroes) and Brad Dourif (Deadwood). It is a cheesy disaster film that focuses on the end of the world as a result of giant Plasma Balls that are bombarding the earth. A couple of video store clerks that are really into disaster movies---try to use everything they have learned from those movies to survive the end of the world. This gives us as the viewer a bunch of giant plasma balls taking people out left and right in spectacular fashion. The video store clerks reference and repeat a bunch of famous movie lines --which must have helped the writers of the film cut down on quite a bit of dialogue. The clerks then decide to break sci-fi writer out of the mental hospital to help stop the end of the world ---which leads to a great Deep Blue Sea moment. The movie didn't feel the balls of plasma alone were a good enough antagonist so they add in a cousin he is only out to save himself as a extra human antagonist. The movie is silly and preposterous and kind of fun at moments. It was almost SO bad that it was Good---but didn't quite get there.
The movie starts out with a huge big budget museum set with Arnold saying some of the worst one liners ever. It turns into Batman on Ice or a really bad Universal Studios Stunt show. Batman and Robin is by far the worst of any of the Batman movies. But is it actually SO BAD that it is GOOD. It has way too many characters......Batman, Robin, Mr Freeze, Poison Ivy --Bat Girl and Bane. BANE the main star of the most recent Batman is reduced to a grunting Mexican Wrestler taxi driver for Poison Ivy. With huge stars and an enormous budget in the right hands it could have been a good movie---but it is so cheesy and so over the top and silly that it is utterly terrible. Re-watching the beginning of this film for the first time in over a decade today I was amazed at how incredibly terrible the movie was. Which begs the question Is it actually SO BAD that it is GOOD. Watching it now it is almost pure gold like Showgirls. This movie should have its own midnight screenings with villains skating around on ice skates and people dressed in bad Superhero outfits. So again I ask is Batman and Robin actually SO BAD that is is GOOD???? It is so weird to see this version of Batman as played by George Clooney that makes Adam West look serious....(Okay Adam West could never look serious, but you get the point). George Clooney, Chris O'Donnell, Arnold, Uma, and that girl from Clueless mix them all together and you get an absolute big budget mess, which is so laughable I'm almost enjoying it..... Well Almost.... They should have gone all the way and made it into a Musical.
Instead of a movie trailer......I give you all the bad lines from Mr Freeze.
Haunted High...aka Ghostquake 2012 SO bad its good.
Starring Danny Trejo (well sort of) and featuring Charisma Carpenter....(for about 1 minute). I decided to watch this movie for Charisma Carpenter since she was one of my favorites from her days on Buffy and Angel and even her guest spots on Veronica Mars. Well she was only actually in the movie for one scene which didn't end well for her character. The movie by Active Entertainment was horrible....I mean really bad ---the dialogue was bad....the story was bad.....the acting was terrible especially the super sweaty fat guy with the bowl haircut. A really cheesy bad horror movie about a demonic ex headmaster of this school gets unleashed from a demonic coin and terrorizes the school with corny lines and silly death scenes. Still upset over being fooled by Charisma Carpenter's actually not really being a part of the movie....I quickly went to commenting about how bad the film was....then it turned the corner ......The magical corner where a film becomes so bad that it is enjoyable....The scene that crossed the mystical border into SO bad it is good....The dead dissected frog attack. "What the hell was that?" "Franken Frogs".... and from there the cheese continued to please.....The music teacher has a cheesy battle with a suit of armor and is crushed by the bleachers...His music student that has the hots for him is tricked by a ghost of him taking a shower and wandering into her death after a cheesy line. The acting in this movie is Troll 2 level...not sure if that was on purpose or whether this movie was just that bad.
I usually love the old school sword and monster films. The Ray Harryhausen spectacles like Jason and the Argonauts and movies like that---this however is so cheesy it is laughable...
326 Magic tricks it advertising ....(I'm still waiting)......Guy Williams (much better in Lost in Space --and better with a sword in Disney's Zorro TV Show) is wasted in this Sindbad movie. Watch as he battles the invisible monster in an arena...(that is one way to save money).....Watch his ship have rocks dropped on it by plastic birds.....Watch him climb the treacherous dusty rope and battle the giant dirty glove with spikes..... and the hand puppet Hydra.....Yes the effects in this movie were so lame that even a stage play wouldn't use them.....As for the 326 magic tricks---I guess most of those take place with the palace magician that seems like a character straight out of Santa Claus vs the Martians or some other terrible film. The sword fights in this film are underwhelming.....Everything is this film is underwhelming.
The trailer pretty much sums up the entire movie....It just barely crosses into SO BAD it is good territory that I gave it a 6 out of 10.....and must of those points come from watching the trailer after the movie.....We are definitely in SO BAD territory.....
