Murder Mystery 2019 7+ out of 10 (Netflix Movie)

Murder Mystery 2019 7+ out of 10

I have grown to really love the movie Just Go With It starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler -so when I first saw the trailer for this direct to Netflix movie--I was excited.

Murder Mystery re-teams Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as married couple that decides to finally go on their honeymoon after 15 years of marriage.  Adam Sandler’s character is a New York cop that wants to be a detective and Aniston plays his wife who likes to read Mystery novels.

On the flight to Europe they get invited on a rich Englishman’s yacht.  This leads to a “Someone in this room is a murderer” plot.  The owner of the yacht gets killed when the lights go off while he is about to change his will.

The murder mystery itself is just okay, but the dialogue and comic chemistry of Sandler and Aniston as a bickering couple is what makes the film good.  Their characters end up being suspected on the murder and must try and solve the murder themselves as the list of other suspects start dying off.   It’s kind of had the feel of movies like The Out of Towners.  I don’t want to say too much about the plot itself –for fear of giving away any of the mystery –but I would definite recommend it a good Comedy/Mystery film with some decent laughs.  I especially loved how the end of the film set itself up so well for a possible sequel (Mystery Movie fans will definitely catch the reference).

Sandler movies can be so hit and miss—but when he has been teamed up with Aniston and Drew Barrymore those films have worked quite well.

Office Christmas Party 2016 6 out of 10

Office Christmas Party   2016  6 out of 10

This movie has a great cast that includes Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, T. J. Miller, and Oliva Munn to name just a few.  Unfortunately like so many modern comedies it just never achieves the level of humor of a classic comedies.  This movie is meant to be "The Hangover"  of office comedies, but comes up short.

The premise of the story features on uptight CEO (Jennifer Aniston)  that threatens to shut down her brother (T.J. Miller) branch.   Profits have been down so she cancels the companies rinky dink wine and cheese holiday party and tells them they will need to layoff 40% of their staff.    Instead they decide as a hail mary to throw a major christmas party in an effort to land a big client that will save the branch.    Like many current day comedies it has funny moments.   Kate McKinnon in particular shines as the follow the rules HR lady.     I love Jason Bateman, but he plays the same character way too many times.  Jennifer Aniston is wasted as the uptight CEO.

Some of the outrageous politically incorrect party scenes are entertaining, but the plot just falls flat.  The wild party lends itself to a great trailer --but not necessarily a great film.  It especially derails when the branch manager realizes they have failed in their effort and goes on a bender with a pimp that leads to a car crash and ends him up in the hospital with no consequences.  I guess the film makers figured they needed a big action scene.

A couple days before I saw this movie I stumbled across some Re-Runs of the TV show The Office with Steve Carell.  I found myself watching a mini-marathon of this show I used to love back in the day and found myself laughing out loud several times.   The Office Christmas Party didn't get me to laugh outloud.   I would enjoy an episode of a Christmas party episode of The Office more than this movie.

Horrible Bosses 2 2014 7 out of 10 (Can Unnecessary sequels still be good ?)

Horrible Bosses 2  2014  7 out of 10

A lot of sequels are made just because the first movie made a lot of money.  Hollywood doesn't care whether a sequel is necessary or not just whether it could make money.  As a result of a bunch of movies that really don't lend themselves to sequels get them anyway --whether there is a story to tell of not.   The worst example of this was Miss Congeniality.  Arguably the first one was actually pretty good --but the second one was absolutely uncalled for and unnecessary and was actually quite terrible and unforgettable as a result.  Horrible Bosses 2 was an unnecessary film --but it was still actually pretty good.
Horrible Bosses was a solid sequel despite a less interesting plot than the first one.    It proved that an unnecessary sequel can still be good when the level of the talent is good.  The cast chemistry of Jason Bateman, Jason Sudekias and Charlie Day make this movie enjoyable.
The original movie featured three friends that all worked for terrible bosses that decide over drinks that if they killed off each other’s bosses their lives could be better.   A crazy and implausible plot that goes horribly wrong.   Think Strangers on a Train meets the Three Stooges.  In the sequel they have gone into business for themselves and get screwed over in a ruthless business deal that causes them to lose everything.    So of course they decide to kidnap the guy's son to get their money back.   Again a very misguided and unbelievable decision that once again goes terrible wrong.
The best part of the movie is the chemistry of the three main characters.  They work so good and compliment each other so well.   A perfect example of this chemistry is in the scene where two characters are breaking into the dentist office to get laughing gas for their upcoming kidnapping attempt and are communicating with Jason Bateman’s character via Dora walkie talkies and keep mentioning his real name.  This scene has some great dialogue as the characters try to come up with code names mid crime.
If you liked the first Horrible Bosses then you will most likely enjoy the sequel as well.

We're the Millers 2013 9 out of 10

We're the Millers  2013   9 out of 10

We're the Millers was funny from start to finish (something not common in most comedies these days).   I truly enjoyed the tone of the film and can't wait to get it when it comes out on DVD.   It had strong plot about a pot dealer that gets backed into having to smuggle a "smidge" of weed over the border to repay his boss (Ed Helms)  the pot that was stolen from him.   He recruiters his neighbors to pose as his fake family in order to try and trick the border patrol and make the job easier.   It plays out like a dirty version of the Griswalds  if Clark was a pot dealer and his wife was a stripper.   Jennifer Aniston stars along with Jason Sudeikis as the fake couple and they both provide non stop laughs.  The entire cast was great and included small roles with both Tomas Lennon (Lt Dangle) and Ken Marino (Burning Love & Party Down)    Many  modern comedies don't have a strong plot and just seem like a bunch of connected skits.  We're the Millers delivers not only laughes, but a solid plot with a satisfying conclusion.   Plus Jennifer Aniston has never looked hotter than during the little striptease she does to save them after they are captured by the Mexican drug dealers.   The movie really exceeded my expectations  and was probably the best comedy I've seen in the theaters since the first Hangover.

Just Go With It 2011 9 out of 10

Just Go With It 2011  9  out of 10

I guess the title would be a good suggestion when watching this movie. Just Go With It...because the plot is absurd....In real life nobody would just go with the leaps of faith you have to take in order to believe the stories plot line.....But putting that aside--and "Just Going With It" the film turned out to be a lot of fun. Adam Sandler is in his watered down less annoying mode for this film and Jennifer Aniston is gorgeous and delightful. I'm a big fan of the TV show Friends and have always thought Jennifer Aniston was very talented --(she just hasn't picked the most successful films in her post Friends career. This was one of her better films.]The film follows Sandler's character, a plastic surgeon who discovered after a bad almost marriage years ago that wearing a wedding ring was a great way to pick up chicks. Unfortunately a girl that he falls in love with while not using his trick finds his wedding ring in his pocket and let's just say it like Ricky Ricardo "Lucy . you got a lot of splaining to do" He makes up a fake story about being in the middle of getting divorced and ropes Jennifer Aniston to be his fake wife. Well anyone can see where this story is going from there, but the ride (although not believable at all--especially how quickly he is ready to marry said girl (Brooklyn Decker of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit fame). The fake situations are enjoyable to watch as is Sandler's best buddie Nick Swardson (of the gay guy on roller skates Reno 911 fame). So all in all a very good (implausible and predictable) romantic comedy in an era where so many romantic comedies don't cut it. My advice.....Just Go With IT

Wanderlust 2012 4 out of 10

Wanderlust 2012.   George and Linda are both out of a job and can no longer afford the tiny little micro loft they just bought in New York,  so they take off for Atlanta so George can work for his asshole brother.   That doesn't turn out so well and so they decide to return to this little hippie commune that they got stuck in on the way there.  The movie is basically a Lost in America that instead of following  this better films format gets mired down in bad hippie jokes.  The film has a great cast that stars two of my favorite actors.  The always beautiful Jennifer Aniston and solid performer comedy performer  Paul Rudd.  The cast also features many of  the old MTV sketch comedy show The State.   Unfortunately for me the cast gets wasted figuratively and literally in this story at the hippie commune they get stuck in and try to embrace on their journey.  If you are fan of the cult classic Wet Hot American Summer --a cult classic also written by David Wain that came from The State as well you will probably like this film as well.   For me  the movie  just fell flat as the story went from one hippie drug joke to the next, not my cup of tea.

Friends with Money 2006 3 out of 10

Dull --bland  --this movie really didn't have anything new or important to say --And really seemed pointless. Sure Jennifer Anison in a French Maid outfit for 20 seconds was nice---but not reason enough to justify an otherwise dull story of 4 womens lives.
It was like a really bad episode of Sex in the City without the humor.

Horrible Bosses 2011 8+ out of 10

Horrible Bosses was a fun R Rated comedy.   A modern day 9 to 5 where in this case instead of one asshole boss played by Dabney Coleman in the original we get 3 totally horrible bosses (of course I wouldn't have complained about Jennifer Aniston).   And instead of 3 women wanting to kill their boss we get  the always excellent Jason Bateman  as well as Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis.

The bosses are all excellent in this movie.  Kevin Spacey plays the perfect asshole boss (a role he was born for as seen previously in Swimming with Sharks).  Jennifer Aniston was hilarious in a role outside of her norm as the Dentist that sexually harasses her assistant.   And Colin Farrell was great as the ninja sword wielding  cokehead that takes over for his father.    The movie and chemistry between the actors was nearly perfect and the movie had many good scenes like the their meeting with the "Hit Man that does Wet Work"  which was very funny.   Another great scene is when they are doing recon on Kevin Spacey's house and Charlie Day is supposed to be on look out.    It ranks right up there with Hangover 2 for me for 2011 comedies and succeeds where I felt the funny but overrated  Bridesmaids didn't.
