SiREN 2016 6 out of 10

SiREN  2016 6 out of 10

SiREN is a movie about a bachelor party gone wrong.  The Groom's brother decides to take him and some buddies to some random town instead of Vegas (Vegas costs to much to film in). They end up in a crappy strip club until some mysterious stranger in a trench coat invites them to something a little different.
They follow along a dirt road to a strange underground night club in a Church/Mansion.   This is the best part of the movie as the weird, creepy, strange supernatural night club.  It reminded me of HellRaiser: Hellworld in that it had cool elements --but it could have been a better film.   The cool set up held a lot of promise which the film fails to deliver in the second half of the movie.  The groom ends up releasing a supernatural creature  (A Siren from Mythology) and the rest of the movie is her killing people and the guy that runs the supernatural nightclub trying to get her back.
I would have rather seen a story focused more on the supernatual night club --which could have been explored more.

It had and interesting concept which is why I give it a 6 out of 10... but it wastes some really good potential.

Flashback Friday Movie Review: Flatliners 1990 6 out of 10

Flatliners 1990  6 out of 10

I never got around to seeing Flatliners when it came out back in 1990,  which is a little weird because I pretty much watched everything.    Back in the day I wasn't much of a Kiefer Sutherland or Julia Roberts fan.  I grew an appreciation for him after Dark City and the tv series 24 (Still not a fan of Julia).   I noticed it was playing on Chiller TV the other day and figured I'd finally get around to checking it out.

Flatliners has a quality cast that consists of Kiefer Sutherland,  Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt and Kevin Bacon.  They play a bunch of medical students that decide to experiment around with death to see into the other side.   The movie has a cool cast and an interesting concept.  They take turns stopping their hearts and then bringing each other back from the edge,  the results aren't what they planned for.

As I mentioned above I loved the concept - but the execution feel flat (sorry bad pun)   The concept could have been taken in so many interesting and cool directions.  Instead it ended up being a little dull.  The characters end up being haunted by sins or traumatic moments from their past and struggle to resolve those issues.  I was really hoping for something more interesting out of a concept that opened so many doors.   It was cool to finally see the movie with it's 1990 retro mullets and catch these actors when they were young again, but I had just hoped for more out of the story.

I hear that a remake is in the works.   Hopefully they can take it in a more interesting direction.

Evidence 2013 7 out of 10

Evidence 2013   7 out of 10

Evidence was a twist on the lost footage genre.  It follows some cops trying to piece together some killing from on some video footage left behind by several of the victims.  The video footage was shot by a filmmaker that was making a video documentary on her friend while the killings occurred.  The movie has a bunch of twists and red herrings which makes it nearly impossible to piece together exactly what is happening.  Even though the plot is really far fetched---I give the filmmakers some credit for trying a different approach to the genre.

The story follows a group of three friends that are going on a bus trip to Vegas for a video shoot or something ----It doesn’t really matter why –because they never make it to Vegas.  Instead they get butchered in some random abandoned town on a dirt road after their bus breaks down.   Of course in the real world the people would probably stop filming –but of course the movie would be over if they did so you need to accept this unlikely premise to buy in.   There were so many false leads that after awhile I just gave up on trying to figure it out ---because like the twist of the movie that baffled the cops ---the audience is lead down a certain path as well.  I can’t decide whether this was super clever or manipulative on the part of the film makers.    If you are a fan of the lost footage genre I’d say check this one out ---just for the added element of the story of the cops piecing through the Evidence.

Drive Thru 2007 6 out of 10

Drive Thru 2007 6 out of 10

I was flipping through channels over the weekend and passed Chiller TV and saw a quick blurb about a movie that said something like "A bunch of High School teenagers must save their town from a Killer Clown that works at a fast food restaurant".   I had to record this of course (expecting it to be absolutely terrible)  but it had me at Killer Clown working at a Fast Food restaurant which makes it a possible so bad it is good movie.

The movie opens with a bunch of punks pulling into a late night fast food drive thru.  The punks and their death scene is something straight out of Toxic Avenger as they break into the fast food restaurant and die in a gory way at the hands of a Clown with a head that has a speaker box for a mouth and an outfit straight out of the band KISS's closet.   The movie is just an average horror flick peppered with some decent kills -like the cool scene in a Haunted Funhouse ride. The killer clown has some decent cheesy one-liners which also make the film watchable.

The story basically features a group of kids that are getting killed off by this Killer (Rock N Roll) Clown that is the evil looking mascot from a burger chain called Hella-Burger.  Think if Krusty The Clown from the Simpsons had a evil baby with Jack from Jack n'the Box. The story itself is an often used plot straight out of Nightmare on Elm Street or similar revenge stories.   A character that had been bullied or "Killed" by a group of teens in the past takes out his revenge on the children of those teens that hurt him.  Don't expect anything new or original here, but you may enjoy it if you are fan of evil clowns.

The acting in the movie is decent. The lead actress Leighton Meester has actually been in a bunch of other things since then and she makes for a good lead character.
