The Internship 2013 7+ out of 10

The Internship 2013 7+ out of 10

When the trailers for this movie  starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson came out I kind of dismissed it as a possible rental and then quickly forget about it.   The plot seemed silly at first glance.  Two old  sales guys lose their jobs and decide to become Google Interns?   I didn’t sound like a must see movie.

Well Sunday morning it happened to be on TV and was only about 5 minutes in so me and my wife started watching it and actually ended up really liking it.   Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are dong there same old routine in this movie,  it is almost like they are just playing themselves.   Sometime it works and sometimes it doesn’t –this movie it worked.  Vince Vaughn wrote the movie and he crafted it to take advantage of his and Owen’s talents.   What seemed like an uninspired premise –turned into a funny version of a rag tag group of nerds  (Revenge of the Nerds Style) overcoming huge odds.  Sure it was far-fetched –but it was just funny.  Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn work well together in this flick like a well-oiled comedy machine—like a Stan and Ollie or Abbott and Bud.  You can tell that they enjoy working together.  Their comedy chemistry just works so well in this movie.

One of my favorite little scenes is the scene where Vince Vaughn goes to pay for his food at the Google offices and is told it is free.  He goes into a long silly Vince Vaughn still rambling and ends up taking a whole bunch of more food –just because it was free.

If you like either of these actors and dismissed this movie at first –because it just didn’t sound interesting enough –give it a try.  If you aren’t a Vince Vaughn fan you probably won’t like it.

The Watch 2012 8 out of 10

The Watch 2012   8 out of 10

Sometimes you can put a bunch of talented comedians and get a movie that just doesn't work.  This isn't an example of that.  The Watch was very watchable.    It was a good solid comedy movie with a strong cast of comedians.  Ben Stiller is he controlling OCD type that starts the group.  Vince Vaughn plays a less cocky version of his normal self and Jonah Hill as a total weirdo.   Ben Stiller's character decides to start a neighborhood watch after his coworker is killed at Walmart.  A group of guys join his watch, all for their own reasons and make up a good comedic team that while trying to investigate the murder stumble across an alien invasion.  The onscreen chemistry of the characters works well and the comedy and action of the movie are well balanced.    I especially thought that Vince Vaughn (who has a Bill Murray like ---Sometimes great ---sometimes annoying  thing going for him)   was great.    The movie had some quality comedy sequences in a plot that was well paced.  The funniest segment is when they capture a "Dead" alien and take a bunch of super weird pictures with it.  The special effects were also solid in this film and the aliens were more menacing than one would expect in a comedy like this.

The Dilemma 2011 7 out of 10

The Dilemma 2011    7 out of 10

The Dilemma is a solid movie about a guy that finds out that his best friend is being cheated on right in the middle of a big deal that they are working on at work.  The Dilemma is how he should break the news to his best friend.   The movie was promoted as a comedy,  but it really wasn't a comedy at all.  Other than the fact that Vince Vaughn has some of his typical Vince Vaughn style dialogue it was much more of a drama.  His character struggles with breaking the news to his best pal played by Kevin James.  I thought it had a good solid plot which also dealt with Vince Vaughn's character dealing with his own trust issues in his relationship with the always beautiful Jennifer Connelly concerning his gambling addiction problems.  If you go into the movie expecting a comedy you may be disappointed,  but if you take it for what it is it was actually quite good. The subject matter is more serious than the trailer shows.

Couple's Retreat 2009 9 out of 10

Couple's  Retreat 2009    9  out 10

This is an example of one of those comedies that the first time you see it is pretty good and then you catch it again and like it more each time.  The movie focuses on four couples that all go on vacation together on a tropical island of Eden.  The one couple that convinced them to go is on the verge of breaking up (played excellently by Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman).  They couldn't afford to go on their own, but got a great group rate,  which they convince the other couples to go for the snorkeling and jet skiing.   Of course once they all get there they find out that the couples therapy is a requirement of their stay.  Vince Vaughn is at his best in this film with the great throw away lines and comments and the story about each of the couples is fun to watch.   I've found myself drawn into watching this again when it airs on TV to see certain scenes and dialogue and it has grown to be one of the few comedies in recent years that I have liked enough to watch multiple times.
The cast is perfect and the story is entertaining which is something I think is rare in most modern comedies.  Check out the trailer and rent this one.

Swingers 1996 8 out of 10

Swingers  1996   8 out of 10

I revisited Swingers for the first time in many years since Kim had never seen it and it was playing in this little retro wine bar in Solvang a few months back.   Swingers is all about hopeless single Mike (played by on Favreau) --who is tying to deal with a breakup of a six year relationship and get back out there again.   He dives into the retro cool LA nightlife with the help of his buddies that include a younger skinnier  Vince Vaughn and Ron Livingston that keep trying to tell him how Money he is.  Mike struggles in  the singles world of Swing music and hip LA parties and retro hangouts....that are perfectly set to a great soundtrack.   Mike's desperate search to get over his ex is filled with great witty dialogue.   The movie is worth watching just for the scene where Mike ends up calling a girl he just meet at a bar  an hour later after being told to wait at least 3 days before calling.  He leaves a series or desperate messages that scares the girl off before they could even have a date.
