John Carter of Mars vs Princess of Mars

John Carter of Mars 2012....
The first trailers for this film were underwhelming --but now it looks like it could be an epic movie.   I fear that it could be one of those really great movies that nobody goes and sees though.   It is supposed to be a series of movies yet--if no one goes to the first one the series could die really fast.  It is based on the  books of

Edgar Rice Burroughs  of Tarzan fame.  So here is hoping that this big budget film that so far has not been generating buzz can find it before it opens....

Let's hope that it is better than the  2009 Syfy channel movie starring Antonio Sabato Jr in some rented Gladiator outfit  and Traci Lords wearing a fake Princess Leia bikini costume....  This dull version was super cheesy...with bad monster masks and an extremely low budget.

You tube Video of the week: The Elephant Guy : Steve Martin

I stumbled across this while looking for a certain Christmas clip.
Steve is a comedy god

When Christmas goes Wrong Part 5 :Santa Claus 1959

Santa Claus 1959 2 out of 10

You would think a movie about Santa Claus battling the devil would be more interesting. NOT SO MUCH. With the help of Merlin ?? (why not) Santa battles the Devil for childrens souls in this strange Christmas movie out of Mexico (I’m surprised it didn’t have people in Wrestling masks). The movie is filled with narration and is boring. It should have been more interesting–but it wasn’t

When Christmas goes Wrong Part 4 :Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Why wouldn’t he? I mean they did kidnap him and then try to force him to make toys for their kids instead of Earth’s .  He has to fight back at some point right? So Santa and the children take on some bad movie robots and some guys painted green with names like Voldar. You may remember this from when you were a kid and it is just as odd now and not terribly good.

The Changeup 2011 8 out of 10

The Changeup 2011   8 out of 10
The body switch movie is definitely not a new concept by any means.  So what makes this different from say  Freaky Friday or Big or 17 Again  or 13 going on 30 or Like Father Like Son or Vice Versa or 18 Again or Switch?    Well this time we are in for a much more Adult version of the body switch movie.  This body switch movie stars Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds as 2 friends with very different lives that switch while peeing in a magical fountain.   The single guy with no responsibility learns to grow up a little and the married guy that takes life to seriously learns to lighten up and enjoy life a little again.   What makes it special is the fact that the character lessons are heart felt and the story is strong which is a surprise when you consider all of the dirty jokes in this R Rated movie.  The movie is R rated funny without losing the message of its story.  Jason Bateman is great playing Ryan Reynolds character (a departure from his typical character which he plays at the beginning).  All in all a solid film.

The Good Humor Man 1950

The Good Humor Man 1950   7 out of 10

The Good Humor Man is delivering more than ice cream treats in this 1950's movie starring Jack Carson.  It is all about slapstick goofy cartoon like fun.   The Good Humor Man  gets caught up in more that he bargained for while on his daily route.  He ends up being accused of a theft and must bumble and stumble his way too prove he is innocent.   It has some funny slapstick gags and ends with a old time  Pie assault.   Good times and good humor if you like old school slapstick comedy this one is a treat.

When Christmas goes Wrong Part 3 :Snowmageddon 2011

Snowmageddon 2011

Snowmageddon 2011 6 out of 10 (it should be a 2 out of 10 but turned into a so bad it was good movie by how bad it was)
I can’t find a poster for this Christmas disaster film that was on Syfy channel last week. In the town of Normal (of course it is ) things aren’t quite what they seem. This could have been a cool old school Twilight Zone episode if the twist wasn’t revealed 5 minutes into the movie. Instead it is a bad disaster film with a mystical twist. Instead of revealing that everything that happens in this Snow globe that arrived at the door step of this family happens to the actual town at the end of the movie–we know right off the bat. The plot is silly and the effects just as silly… Like the guy driving the car when a giant spike comes out of the ground to kill him. They eventually decide the answer to all their problems is to throw the snowglobe into the volcano. (of course they do said my friend when I texted him what was happening in the movie). Could have been a cool concept but instead was a really silly film.

Bridget Jones Diary 2001 10 out of 10
My favorite Romantic Comedy of all-time. Starting with the dreadful christmas sweater worn by Collin Firth and including the worst ever man fight in the snow. A great British comedy.

When Christmas goes Wrong Part 2 :Santa's Slay

Santa's Slay
In 2005′s Santa’s Slay 7 out of 10 (because it is so bad that it is good on purpose) Bill Goldberg of wrestling fame is an evil Santa that kills people. You see the real story of Santa Claus has been kept from us for hundreds of years and now Santa is back and out for blood. This movie features Santa killing people in a strip club as he reigns terror on a small town.
They should call it Kill Santa Kill.

Here is the trailer

Elf 2003 9 out of 10
I thought this movie was just okay the first time I saw it. Then it really grew on me. Will Ferrell is hilarious as the Man/Elf –his spirit and childlike wonder are infectious. “It’s magical” as Buddy the Elf would say. James Caan was a great casting choice.

When Christmas goes Wrong Part 1 :Gremlins

Gremlins 1984  10 out of 10

Gremlins is a classic movie which I didn’t include in my greatest Christmas movie post since I felt it needed its own category and I wanted the best Christmas movie to be about Christmas. In Gremlins a small town at Christmas gets turned into rubble because Billy can’t follow a few simple rules about his cute little new pet. (I still think the Don’t feed them after midnight rule needs to be explained better). Gremlins terrorize the town in this classic 80′s movie–making for one of the worst Christmas’s that anyone can remember (With the exception of Billy’s love interest Kate–she had a worse one)

“Kate: Now I have another reason to hate Christmas.
Billy Peltzer: What are you talking about?
Kate: The worst thing that ever happened to me was on Christmas. Oh, God. It was so horrible. It was Christmas Eve. I was 9 years old. Me and Mom were decorating the tree, waiting for Dad to come home from work. A couple hours went by. Dad wasn’t home. So Mom called the office. No answer. Christmas Day came and went, and still nothing. So the police began a search. Four or five days went by. Neither one of us could eat or sleep. Everything was falling apart. It was snowing outside. The house was freezing, so I went to try to light up the fire. That’s when I noticed the smell. The firemen came and broke through the chimney top. And me and Mom were expecting them to pull out a dead cat or a bird. And instead they pulled out my father. He was dressed in a Santa Claus suit. He’d been climbing down the chimney… his arms loaded with presents. He was gonna surprise us. He slipped and broke his neck. He died instantly. And that’s how I found out there was no Santa Claus. ”

Scrooged 1988 9 out of 10
Of all the Christmas Carol movies that I have seen over the years….This one with Bill Murray as a ruthless tv exec is the best…It is totally captures the tradional Christmas Carol story but makes it funny as well. Bill Murray is the great Bill Murray of films like Stripes or Ghostbusters in this one perfectly using his sarcastic skills to perfection.
